The Power Chord Guide For Beginners

Guitar power chords are made up of a minimum of the root note and the 5th note of a chord. So what does that mean? The definition of a chord is playing at least two notes together at the same time. So if you play the first and fifth scale degrees together, you are playing the power chord. Power chords are major chords since you are only playing the first and fifth notes. To further explain the theory behind power chords, Look at the key of C major. As you can see, each note in the scale has a corresponding number which is called the scale degree. The first note in the scale is the C note which is always the root. The fifth note in the scale is the G. So if you look at the C power chord it is made up of C as the root and G as the fifth. The first and fifth notes of the scale make up the C power chord. This is also notated as C5. C is the 1st note and G is the 5th note.
